Severe Aplastic Anemia

Using a mouse model of severe aplastic anemia we are studying mechanisms that lead to bone marrow hypocellularity, HSC loss, and collapse of blood production.

Bone Marrow Failure

Bone marrow failure is a devastating illness where the body fails to produce blood. There are inherited and acquired forms of bone marrow failure, and they share a common pathology characterized by aberrant inflammatory responses. In a mouse model of severe aplastic anemia, we identified an essential role for resident macrophages in sensing interferon gamma and mediating the loss of HSCs. We are currently investigating the role of macrophages in driving HSC activation in models of severe aplastic anemia, to identify how macrophages drive pathogenesis.
